BENTON, KY The final game of the night pitted the Prolific Prep Crew against the Hillcrest Prep Bruins against each other. Prolific’s scoring rout got going quick starting from a three by Gary Trent, Jr. Hillcrest, without Ayton, was able to stay with the Crew’s scoring early in the first quarter. Trent (7pts), who was just starting to get going offensively after two dunks, left the game with an injury. A series of defensive stops helped Prolific pull away from the Bruins and go into halftime leading 36-24. Hillcrest started the second half off with back to back dunks from Josh Green and Shamiel Stevenson, but could not catch up to the Crew’s lead. Prolific went on to win their second game of the weekend, 73-54. Paul Scruggs made up for Trent’s absence on the offensive end, showing great versatility. He finished the game with a double-double and, rightfully so, was given game MVP honors. He had 20 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist. Senior Abu Kigab, once again, was big for Prolific, shooting 7/10 from the field for 18 points, 6 rebounds, and a steal. Junior Amadou Sow also stepped up in scoring, finishing with 14 points (7/10 from the field), 5 boards, and 2 steals. Hillcrest was just another team whose shots were not falling for them today. However, Josh Green shot 6/9 from the field, leading all scorers with 21. The young sophomore went 3/3 from the three point line and 6/8 from the charity stripe, finishing his night with 21 points and 3 rebounds. Shamiel Stevenson, who had a few exciting dunks in the game, finished with 7 points, 7 rebounds. Other contributors were found in seniors Virshon Cotton, Alfred Hollins, and Andrija Ristanovic: Cotton had 9pts, 1stl, Hollins had 7pts, 4rbs, Ristanovic had 8pts, 1rbs, and 1bk.   UP NEXT The Grind Session heads to Scottsdale, AZ for the Duel in the Desert at Bella Vista College Prep School. 5 games will be played in 2 days. BENTON, KY Newly founded program Aspire Academy proved themselves as a force to be reckoned with against a very talented Oak Hill squad. Despite Oak Hill getting on the board first and having many exciting moments, Aspire led at the end of the first quarter 18-14. The game stayed close through the rest of the half with the teams going into the locker room tied at 26 at halftime. The scoring woes continued throughout much of the second half for both squads, with Oak Hill leading by 2 at the end of the third. The Warriors of Oak Hill picked it up a bit in the fourth quarter, scoring 20 points to lift them over Aspire, 57-41. Game MVP went to the Kansas signee Billy Preston, who had a huge night for the Warriors. Preston scored 16 points and had a stunning 17 rebounds and also added 2 assists and 2 steals. Senior Matt Coleman, whose final three list includes Duke, Stanford, and Texas, stepped into more of a scoring role on the Warriors second game of the weekend. Despite scoring more, he showed that he is a true point guard by always looking for the open player rather than being a score-first player. He finished with 14 points, 4 boards, 2 steals, and an assist. The Aspire Wizards were led by their point guard, Milton Wordlow III, who took over scoring in the first half. Wordlow used his speed to get inside, where he was able to draw 7 fouls. He finished the night leading all scorers with 17 points, 5 rebounds, an assists, and a steal. Sophomore Joel Brown was also a factor in keeping the Wizards in this one, finishing with 8 points, 6 boards, and 2 steals. Senior Rodrigue Andela was huge for Aspire defensively, with 8 rebounds and a block to go with 4 points.   UP NEXT The Grind Session heads to Scottsdale, AZ for the Duel in the Desert at Bella Vista College Prep School. 5 games will be played in 2 days. BENTON, KY The second matchup of the nightcap was a highly anticipated one, pitting two Illinois state champions against each other, Althoff Catholic from Belleville versus Curie from Chicago. Right from the tip Althoff went on a 7-0 run, which prompted an early Curie timeout. Out of the timeout Curie was able to get an 8-0 run going to go up 8-7. The game continued to be close and fast throughout the first half and was tied at the half. The game had 9 lead changes and 10 ties, many of which came in the second half, where each team traded buckets numerous times. Ultimately it was the speedy Curie squad who would come out on top, 81-80. The well-disciplined Curie Condors were led in scoring by Tulsa signee Elijah Joiner, who had shot 10/16 for 28 points. Joiner used his speed to penetrate the defense in order to get to the basket. He finished with 28 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals, and game MVP. Seniors Allante Pickens and Terry Smith, Jr. were also in double figures for the Condors. Pickens finishing with 14 points, 2 assists, and Smith, Jr. had 23 points, 8 boards. The Martin brothers were both factors on the glass for the Condors, Treavon had 6 boards, while Tyree had 9 rebounds and 2 blocks (one block resulting in a Smith, Jr. dunk). It was Althoff Catholic’s Jordan Goodwin who led all scorers in the contest with 30. The St. Louis signee combined with fellow senior Marvin Bateman kept the Crusaders within close reach of Curie’s lead. Goodwin finished the contest with a double-double, 30 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assissts, and a block. Bateman hit 7 three pointers in the close contest, finishing with 26 points, 2 rebounds, and a steal.   UP NEXT The Grind Session heads to Scottsdale, AZ for the Duel in the Desert at Bella Vista College Prep School. 5 games will be played in 2 days.
